1 of 6 Tsunami witnessed in Morro Bay, CA, 11 March 2011, from a set of six snapshots taken in between 10AM and noon. Note in some photos the erosion of the sandspit’s edge, which is typically flat, now has an approximate 36 inch drop. In about an hour we witnessed the Morro Bay estuary entirely filling and then draining and filling once more like it would usually do over a 12 hour period (see commentary below for a far more scientific therapy). We missed the more dramatic action a couple of hours earlier as we had been at Burger King staying additional protected a lot additional away and on greater ground. Rouvaishyana, our CA State Park Interpreter, and the Manager of the Morro Bay Museum of All-natural History, and leader of all us docents, circulated the following scientific report of the occasion: He says “I posted a two-page log, pasted below, as a temporary interpretive summary of this morning’s tsunami, clearly visible from the Museum of Natural History, on the front doors and at White’s Pt. This gives background information on the source of this phenomenon and some of its observed effects here inside Morro Bay. Thanks, Rouvaishyana. [begin Rouvaishyana’s report] Tsunami of March 11, 2011: At about 12:30 AM on this date, a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck Japan north of Tokyo. Shortly afterward, a series of tsunami waves over 20 ft. high hit shores and harbors there, causing extensive damage and loss of life. About four:00 AM this morning, tsunami waves of 6-7 ft. in height struck the Hawaiian Islands. Waves struck in Oregon and Northern California in between 7:30 and 8:00 AM this morning. Very first surge-At 8:30 AM these days, the water in Morro Bay began to recede quickly toward the harbor entrance, indicating a tsunami was coming soon. By 8:45, the first crest of 4-5 ft. surged into Morro Bay, filling the whole estuary in 15-20 minutes. Docks had been torn loose and broken, and channel buoys had been torn from their moorings. Low tide was at 9:01 AM, .8 ft. Second surge-Water flowed out of the bay, and the 2nd surge swept into the bay at 9:45 AM, again covering mud flats and filling the bay in much less than 20 minutes. Third surge-Water subsided once more, and the 3rd surge entered the bay at 10:15 AM. A tsunami is not a single wave. Rather, it is a series of waves that surge ashore following an earthquake. The initial surge is frequently not the largest. So far right now, the 2nd and 3rd surges did not move as much water as the 1st one, but keep in thoughts that there could be a series of inward and outward surges of water continuing for many hours or even most of the day. The Museum is closed until further discover nowadays, but could re-open. At our elevation, this is a quite protected spot to be, and White’s Pt. above the Museum is a excellent vantage point from which to watch this natural phenomenon. Today’s tsunami surges have been relatively little at four-5 ft. or much less. If you are observing the water move these days, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Be alert for bigger waves that could come hours from now or later these days. Remain tuned to nearby radio stations or weather channels for additional information. Immediately after debating whether something had truly happened (&quotDidn’t you hear that ‘gunshot’ sound?, &quotI do not see anything incorrect&quot , &quotThere’s absolutely a thing incorrect, the backstays are fully loose&quot, &quotOh, yeah, I can see the forestay is sort of dangling up there&quot ) we doused the sails and secured the mast forward with a couple of halyards.

We then radioed the nearest Moorings charter base who told us to secure the mast forward with a couple of halyards (&quotuh yeah, we’ve already accomplished that&quot) and to motor in to the nearest base (Canouan).

While we produced it to Canouan safely, it was not on our itinerary and there is fairly significantly definitely nothing to do there. We waited a day and a half for a repair that in no way came prior to we had been finally told that we would have to move to a new boat. Moorings offered us a catamaran which we believed was excellent considering that we’d always wanted to attempt bareboating on a cat.
